Barnaby's Steakhouse in New Paltz: Surf and Turf at its Best
Barnaby's steakhouse on Chestnut Ave. in New Paltz rewards diners with dry-aged steaks and outstanding seafood dishes. The restaurant, housed in two story local landmark built in 1863, formerly The Village Hall Theatre, and Opera House has all the charm needed to entice a loyal clientele who enjoy a big selection of succulent, delicious steaks and fresh fish.
Owner Peter Vanikiotis has done a beautiful job of preserving some of the original building's interior. The wood accented and exposed beam decor and comfortable banquets at the street level tavern room makes for a cozy and relaxed mood. Upstairs, the very spacious dining room is a real gem. With seating capacity for 150, the room provides dining guests with an engaging interior that features tall ceiling murals and original chandeliers and ceiling fans. And seating traditionally styled with crisp table linen, mahogany booths, and a beautifully polished bar, uniquely define a classy, elegant and iconic steakhouse ambiance. Occasionally live music is performed. On my recent visit to Barnaby's for starters I had the Calamari Fritti, a big delicious serving of tender fried rings of fresh breaded squid, served with a pesto aioli and marinara sauce.
After enjoying a classic Cuban mojito, a Bahama Mama, and Barnaby's famous Crab Cakes, my dinner followed with a Surf and Turf of Filet Mignon. The hearty, and tender cut of beef arrived alongside fresh Lobster Tail and steaming side dishes of mashed potatoes and string beans. All portions were hearty and the feast was properly presented. The Filet Mignon was grilled perfectly medium rare, for a juicy and flavorful mouthwatering experience. The Lobster was fresh, cooked on point, bringing out its its delicious exuberant flavor. A perfect match of surf and turf. After immensely enjoying my food I realize that Barnaby is a paradise for steak dishes. No red meat restraints here. New York Sirloin and Prime Rib-Eye, both cuts of beef come in 12, 14, and 20 oz. portions.
In the seafood department lobsters and shrimp come in big sizes, too. The Grilled Skirt Steak served with onion rings or mashed potatoes and choice of vegetable is another classic dish not to be missed. Or go for the Char-Grilled Pork Chops, two good-sized pieces of center cut chops, grilled and served with a fresh apple compote. This entree will surely please. Another seafood entree that is a very good --properly seasoned and cooked, is the Sea Scallops au Gratin : Sweet and tender, golden baked scallops, prepared with mushrooms, shallots, Parmesan cheese, served in a velvety tomato cream is outstanding. Barnaby's also offers many veal and chicken entrees and a nice selection of pasta dishes very reasonably priced.
A smart and extensive wine list at the restaurant features French, Italian,California, Chilean, and Australian varietals. With my dinner I had a superb Peppoli Antinori, Chianti Classico, from Italy and a Casa Lapostolle, Sauvignon Blanc, from Chile. Both wines complemented the meal quite nicely.
As for the staff , I found them to be young, friendly and quite competent at their job. They aptly asked how I would like my steak cooked, and were quick to bring my appetizers and drinks. In the dessert department the usual suspects are to be found on the menu like a Cream Brulee, Tiramisu, and Cheese Cake. I finished my meal with Hot Apple Strudel, that was quite tasty. Barnaby's also offers a Sunday Brunch with a complimentary Mimosa or Bloody Mary.
I really like the vibe and hospitality at Barnaby's. And the owner Peter Vanikiotis is a real nice guy, and very accommodating. The place has panache, and a good feel of a by gone era, a comfortable and lively atmosphere that is condusive to enjoying fresh food with good beer and wine in the company of a nice crowd of town folks. An absolutely great place to go with family and friends for live music, excellent steaks, chops, seafood, and excellent drinks. Rating **** Very Good
